Earth Day 2018: Causes, Effects & Solution to End Plastic Pollution

Earth day is celebrated on 22 April every year and people around the world have celebrated this day for nearly 50 years. The day is noted worldwide in order to support environmental movements and even build awareness to save our planet. The Earth Day campaign this year is “End Plastic Pollution”, where it has been urged to all the people to eliminate the use of plastic and plastic products. Usage of plastic or plastic product can create pollution, which can cause a serious global health problem. Plastic is composed of major toxic pollutants and can cause great harm to air, water, and land.

What are the Causes of Plastic Pollution?

You would find plastic everywhere, starting from milk cartons to water bottles and from disposal glasses to cosmetic products. Every time you use and throw these items you encourage toxic pollutants to enter the environment and do harm. After using the plastic products you throw it or dump it on the ground, thereby allowing the pollutants to enter the ground and as a result affecting the wildlife and groundwater. If you don’t dump it instead you burn it, it even becomes more harmful to the environment as it pollutes the air. Inhaling the pollute air would affect your health and this can cause respiratory problems as well.

Every year, more than 100 million tons of plastic are produced throughout the world and out of this, 25 million tons falls under non-degradable plastic. These get accumulated in the environment thereby causing pollution. It has been studied that approximately 70,000 tons of plastic are dumped into the oceans and seas and this is how we pollute the sea water as well.

Say No To Plastic Pollution

Effects of Plastic Pollution

Plastic Pollution can create a havoc on natural environments thereby leading to long-term issues for plants, animals, and to the human being as well. Some of the effects of plastic pollution are mentioned below:

World’s water is in great danger because when you dump plastic in water it pollutes it and as a result, the groundwater and reservoirs becomes susceptible to leaking the environmental toxins. More you litter and pollute the oceans or river more you cause the problem to marine species.

When you dump plastic or plastic products in landfills, it gets interacts with water thereby forming hazardous chemicals. These chemicals get seeped underground and start degrading the water quality. Sometimes, wind also carries the plastic from one place to another and this again increases the land pollution. Plastic pollution can also lead to innumerable deaths of aquatic animals, and this can also affect the aquatic plants as well. Besides this, accumulation of dumped plastic can also be the breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other harmful vector insects, which may cause numerous diseases in humans.
